Frequently Asked Questions
on just about everything

You can help write this webpage.   Just ask us a question!

Why buy from a breeder rather than a pet shop?

  1. A pet shop buyer has no access to the breeder for questions.

  2. You don't know how many different breeds and how many litters the breeder has.

  3. You can't see the parents & other relatives to evaluate  temperaments.

  4. Health guarantees from a pet shop might not be met as you expected.

  5. There is no way to check whether the pedigree is accurate.

  6. You can't see the cleanliness of the breeding situation.

I know I should read the label but what should I be looking for in a good quality pet food?

  1. Superior sources of protein - whole fresh meats or single source meat meal

  2. A whole-meat source as one of the first 2 ingredients or two meat sources among the top 3 ingredients

  3. Whole unprocessed grains, vegetable, and other foods - A previously unprocessed food has the best chance of surviving the food-making process with some of its nutrients intact.

  4. High quality pet food should contain a minimum of food fragments and meat by-products.

  5. Consider feeding Raw.

Can I tell what's good by the price?

Although the purchase price of pet food does not always determine whether a pet food is good or bad, the price is often a good indicator of quality. It would be impossible for a company that sells a generic brand of dog food at $9.95 for a 40-lb. bag to use quality protein and grain in its food. The cost of purchasing quality ingredients would be much higher than the selling price.

We recommend the very best you can afford.

Is there any particular brand of dog food I should avoid?

Read the label.  Hallmarks of a low quality dry food include:

  1. Generic fats or proteins - Animal protein and poultry protein are far inferior to beef protein and chicken protein.

  2. Artificial preservatives such as BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin

  3. Artificial coloring

  4. Propylene glycol to make it chewy

  5. Sweeteners such as corn syrup, sucrose ate sometimes added to lower-quality foods to increase their palatability.
